Ynsect, a French start-up specializing in the production of insects, announces the acquisition of the Dutch company Protifarm, which markets insect-based ingredients intended for human consumption. Located in Ermelo, one hour from Amsterdam, this farm employs around 50 people.
Reach 230,000 tonnes producedThrough this operation, Ynsect is increasing its production capacity thanks to a third vertical farm and thus being able to produce more than 230,000 tonnes of ingredients per year. It also wants to accelerate its development on the human consumption market. The Next40 nugget currently produces ingredients for aquaculture, plants and pets.
“This acquisition is a key step, which strengthens Ynsect’s leading position on the world market and which allows us to accelerate in human and anomalous food with complementary products”, declared Antoine Hubert, co-founder and CEO of the young shoot.
A first favorable opinionYnsect now wants to target the human food market. A new step made possible thanks to the obtaining of a “favorable opinion” from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on the use of mealworm for human consumption last January.
This opinion only covers the whole insect, which includes the dried flour which is produced from it. But Ynsect would like to focus its developments on the production of deoiled insect meal, or Molitor beetle, for which other opinions are awaited. These foods can be offered in the fields of sport and health nutrition.
Take advantage of the Protifarm portfolioHaving clients established in Germany, in the Netherlands, in England, in Denmark and in Belgium, the Protifarm portfolio will allow Ynsect to develop more quickly in this market. In addition, the Dutch company has submitted an application for authorization to EFSA for the consumption of Buffalo beetle.
Ynsect now employs 150 people and has raised more than 425 million euros since its creation in 2011 in Paris. Last October, he raised $ 224 million bringing his total Series C fundraiser to $ 372 million.
