This monkey plays on the computer thanks to a chip implanted in its brain

[ad_1]

Neuralink has just published a video that shows a monkey with its brain implant playing on the computer. This is the first time that this company, created by Elon Musk, has demonstrated its technology. The method chosen – a video uploaded to YouTube – is rather unusual. Usually, on such occasions, researchers also publish a study article. It is therefore more of a marketing operation than a scientific demonstration.

The images are nevertheless impressive. According to the voiceover for the video, the monkey was first trained to move the cursor around in a square. If successful, he gets a banana smoothie through a metal straw.Meanwhile, scientists are recording brain activity through the implant in the brain. Then the joystick is disconnected, and the cursor responds directly to brain signals. In a final sequence, we see the monkey playing Pong, the legendary tennis game of the 70s.

Also to discover in video:

This YouTube video has been accompanied a flurry of tweets from Elon Musk. According to him, Neuralink’s first product will allow a paralyzed person “To type faster on your smartphone than with your thumbs”.Later versions of Neuralink can also be implanted in other parts of the body, in order to create a parallel nervous system capable of moving the limbs. “Paraplegics will be able to walk again”, promises Elon Musk.
