Unboxing

Carlock is packed in a rectangular solid cardboard box. Inside, the device and a very complete manual. We can never say it enough, the explanatory notes are always a plus, especially for this kind of product, little known on the market.

Design & Ergonomics

There is not much to say about Carlock's device. It’s a classic OBD socket. The only thing we can say is that the device is relatively discreet. We can therefore imagine that potential thieves do not realize that it is installed inside the car.

Application

The heart of the process. To speak only of the application itself. It is of good quality, works well and does not suffer from particular bugs. Fluid, it offers many possibilities. The geolocation of your car, the auto-lock function which enables monitoring or even the battery level without forgetting a precise logbook on all of your actions, everything is recorded.

Getting started

If the application itself is of good quality, what about its operation? Well there too it’s not bad at all. The advantage, Easy to install and use. Your only big problem will be to find the OBD port on your car. Well, we admit having had a little trouble finding it, a little tour on the net was necessary. Generally it is located under the steering wheel. This was the case for the car used. Be aware that it is possible to contact the company to have the location according to your car, and that is a very good thing.

Once the device is installed, you will need to download the application and create an account on the site with the serial number provided inside the box. Again nothing too complicated. The downside may have come from the recognition time of the car the first time. It took a while for everything to connect well and for the position of the car to be taken into account. Once everything is smart health connected to your smartphone, you will receive in a logbook all the actions of your car. Note that it is possible to configure several different vehicles.

In terms of geolocation, in addition to the small problem at startup explained above, it is quite faithful and you can easily find your vehicle if you do not remember where you parked. But the main interest is of course to be able monitoring his car and be informed during a possible vol. To do this, activate the manual lock or the AutoLock function. The principle is simple, you select schedules where you want to be informed of what is happening. You will be notified immediately if an intrusion is attempted. Better yet, you can follow the vehicle and communicate all this information to the police. The chances of finding your car are therefore maximized. Speaking of security, know that all information is on a cloud dedicated only to Carlock.

Last application, and not least, accident warning. Yes the Carlock unit detects a deceleration of 0.9G, the accident notification is triggered. If the owner does not validate the message within 30 seconds, an SMS will be sent to the emergency contacts.

One point remains. The subscription system. Once Carlock is in your hands, you will have to add the price of a subscription. 6.90 euros per month not including SMS notifications. Count 83 euros for 1 year subscription (+20 SMS notifications), 157 euros for 2 yearss (+ 30 SMS) and 222 euros for 3 years (+50 SMS). If you want to buy 100 SMS notifications, you will have to pay 20 euros. In short, we would have preferred a system without subscription. On this point, the brand specifies that the SMS will only be used if the owner is abroad and does not wish to pay the roaming charges abroad. We would have preferred a system without subscription. The fact remains that‘Subscription is without obligation, and that the customer can stop or suspend it when he wishes. In addition the first month is offered.

Note that the presence of a "lifetime subscription”Available at 329 euros. You will need to contact the distributor directly to take advantage of this feature.

Against competition

Locster also offers the same services as Carlock. It is nevertheless sold more expensive, 199 euros, against 139 euros for Carlock on his website. In terms of package, it is also more expensive, 9 euros per month. Unlike Carlock, it does not attach to the OBD port of the car, but hides inside the vehicle or on two wheels.

Compatibility

All cars equipped with an OBD socket (generally corresponds to models after 1996)

Most iOS and Android devices.

Feature reminder

Possibility to geolocate your car remotely

Be informed of an attempted theft

Various alerts to know:

Conclusion

What we liked : Ease of use, number of compatible models, many features.

What we didn't like : Subscription system

Carlock is a success. First of all because it meets a need for anxious motorists, but also because it is simple to use and compatible with almost all models since 1996. Difficult to find real defects in the product if this is the subscription principle in addition to the purchase price. Fortunately, the lifetime subscription system should keep everyone happy. You will still have to pay a large sum at once. Still, at this price and equivalent functionality, no one does better.

Overview

Design : Carlock remains a catch. No follies in terms of design or construction. But he is not made for that either. It is well finished and relatively discreet. That is what matters.Application : The application is also of good quality without shining through a revolutionary interface. She does the job and she does it well.use : Once the product is installed, once again the job is done. Simple and intuitive Carlock is easy to access.Value for money : So yes, Carlock is cheaper than its competitor. However, the subscription system remains a bit too expensive for our taste anyway.
