StopCovid passes the Senate and the National Assembly

The way is clear for StopCovid. The National Assembly and the Senate voted in favor of the deployment of the application after heated debates. The software should arrive in the coming days on iPhone and Android.
All lights are green for StopCovid. The application which has been so controversial in recent weeks has just been validated by Parliament after a day of debate. The software dedicated to the epidemic of the new coronavirus should be published by June 2 in the application stores of Apple and Google.
It is the end of a long way of the cross for Cédric O, who pushed this project a few days after the start of confinement under a rain of criticism. The debates in the National Assembly were also sporty. Defending his project “Epidemiological monitoring” – a term preferable to tracking who would be a “Ugly word” according to the Minister of Health -, the government had to face criticism from the opposition, but also from its majority.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, president of the group La France insoumise, denounced the abuses “Totalitarian” that could generate the bases of this application, while the deputy expert in digital, Paula Forteza, ex-LREM belonging to the new group Ecology democracy solidarity, worried that the efforts of the government are used to “To force the social acceptability of the use of this technology which digitizes our social interactions by a massive deployment driven by the State”. Sacha Houlié (LREM), a longtime opponent of StopCovid, said he had “Trust this government, but (not) blind confidence in the future ".
Last Review, adoption by the population
The LREM group still found some support on the benches of the National Assembly, in particular in the person of Cédric Villani who voted favorably, simply regretting that “Europe has not succeeded in advancing in a united fashion on this front”. Former Secretary of State for Digital, Mounir Mahjoubi, praised “A balanced project that is at the service of the French”, before claiming that StopCovid “Provides all the necessary guarantees in terms of efficiency, protection of individual freedoms and security”.
A little after 7 p.m., 338 votes were therefore declared for the project and 215 against. The Senate followed a few hours later. StopCovid still has to pass a final Review: that of adoption by French women and men.
