Smartwatches: Android Wear sells poorly

While there are no official sales figures from most smartwatch manufacturers, Canalys market researchers have now released forecasts for last year. Android Wear devices sold only sluggishly, according to the report. Just 720,000 smartwatches with the Google OS are said to have been sold in 2014. On the other hand, one million copies of the popular Pebble smartwatch have been sold since its publication in 2013, as the manufacturer recently announced. According to Canalys, a total of 4.6 million wearables were sold in 2014.

Samsung leads the wearable market with its Titzen smartwatch armada – not too much of a surprise with six devices released in 14 months. In the Android Wear devices, Motorola's Moto 360 was the most popular device, followed by the second LG watch G Watch R. Intelligent watches with round displays generally seem to be more popular here.

By the way, Xiaomi presents itself as one of the winners in the wearable sector with its Mi Band. One million copies of the fitness tracker, which cost just 10 euros, were sold.

With the expected launch of the Apple Watch in April, Canalys predicts the wearable market to grow strongly in 2015. According to one company analyst, Apple "made the right decisions with its WatchKit SDK to maximize battery life". The Cupertino watch is supposed to set new standards in terms of energy efficiency. However, this still has to be shown: up to now, it has been assumed that the Apple gadget has to be charged daily. The Apple Watch will sell one way or the other like sliced bread.
