Unboxing of the Arlo Q Plus

The main housing is neat. He respects the green and white color scheme from the Arlo range of cameras. It is a protective cardboard which presents the product and its main features in the front. On the other sides of the box, these same capacities are listed in great detail. Convenient for know what the product is capable of before buying it.

Under this box, we discover the main box of the product. He's from very good quality, resistant, and offers a neat design. Entirely green, it carries the logo of the range of cameras printed in a discreet and elegant way.

The Arlo Q Plus open box

The rest of the packaging is classic: after opening the box and removing the camera, you have access to the other accessories in the box. We can find a set of guides, an adapter for earth connection (with a tip for sockets found in France, and another for those like in England), a base to hang the camera on a wall and a set of screws to fix it, a mini-USB cable, and a PoE adapter (which allows you to use only one cable to connect the device to both the Internet and a power source).

Design and ergonomics of the Arlo Q Plus

The camera design is quite classic. Completely white, it has a diamond shape with rounded corners. Arlo’s head is fully movable relative to its foot thanks to a ball-shaped junction that works like a joint.

The Arlo Q Plus from the front

On the right of the head, we have access to the synchronization button which connects the Arlo Q Plus to a WiFi network, as well as the slot for inserting an SD card and record images without an Internet connection. On the left we can see the speaker from the camera.

The Arlo Q Plus aside

It is simple to handle. Medium in size, it is easy to choose the angle you want to film thanks to the head that swivels in any direction.

The camera can be started in very little time by anyone, even someone having trouble with tech products. The installation guide is precise and getting started requires very few steps which are very detailed. The manual will even guide you through the installation of your camera.

The Arlo Q Plus manual is very detailed

Using the Arlo Q Plus

Netgear's Arlo Q Plus camera defines itself as a new life for security whether at health home or in a public place. It offers video in 1080p HD as well ascompletely free storage of recordings in the Cloud.

Video recording is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can then choose from different storage modes for the videos created. The library is however limited to 7 days, but this remains a more than satisfactory period for free storage.

Its goal: to simplify the protection of a place as much as possible thanks to quality video surveillance. The camera keeps you informed of what's going on in the monitored location anytime and anywhere in the world. Its application available on smartphone and computer lets you watch the live video stream, or access the automatic recordings made by the camera, all with a 1080p image.

The image quality is indeed very good. It should be noted thatshe films like a fish-eye lens (with rounded edges), but the effect is not present to the point of being bothersome and can easily be forgotten. The image remains very beautiful for the use that one makes of a surveillance camera.

It is also equipped a microphone and a speaker, which allows you to interact with the people present in the monitored place.

The Arlo Q Plus does not know rest and its night vision allows it to monitoring a place, whatever the light. The quality of night recordings is surprisingly good, which makes it effective in all circumstances.

In case of suspicious movement, the camera will send a notification to your smartphone. Be careful, they activate at the slightest noise or movement. If the camera is placed in a busy location, you may be inundated with unnecessary notifications, but these will prove invaluable if you have your house monitored during your absence, where only an intruder can trigger them.

Interesting detail: you can share access to the Arlo Q Plus, it is not linked to your account. This simple functionality can turn out to be very useful if someone else needs to access the images.

The Arlo Q Plus offers three different ways to connect it: in PoE (Power over the Ethernet), in WiFi, or by Ethernet. Should there ever be an Internet outage, the camera will still be able to record continuously thanks to a local storage on SD card rather than in the cloud. Please note, the SD card is not not delivered with the product, you will have to buy one or the images will simply not be saved in the event of an Internet outage.

Application of the Arlo Q Plus

The app is a real highlight of the device. It greatly contributes to the ease of installation of the camera, because it is intuitive and easy to use. Its design is very reminiscent of the product with its green and white color scheme.

Once your account is created, you can add Arlo products on the app, Just like you did for the first one. It will be possible for all manage them from the same smartphone.

After installing it, you have a direct access to images recorded by the camera. You can count a lag of approximately 4 seconds between an actual action and its dissemination on the application.

It also lets you choose which image recording mode you want to use. In motion and sound detection mode, it will send you notifications every time it detects something. This mode can be very useful if you want to have your health home monitored during your absence, for example. In planning mode, it will turn on and off automatically according to the schedules you give it, all on a week-long schedule. This mode is more suitable for monitoring a public place, such as offices for example.

Finally, the library gives you access to all files recorded by the camera. It will therefore be short videos of a few seconds if it is in detection mode, or an entire day's recording if you have set it in planning mode.

The Arlo Q Plus against the competition

The least we can say is that the Arlo Q Plus does the job she claims she can do. It is very easy to configure and install, offers a high-quality image, and has an effective application that offers free access to the Cloud, which is a first. For comparison, this service costs 30 € per month for 30 days of accessible recordings. (10 € per month for 10 days of recordings) with Nest Cam. This makes the Arlo much more profitable in the long run. We can however blame him for the absence of an alarm like that of the MyFox security system, which however does not cost more.

Conclusion

Good points

  • 1080p image

  • Application of exemplary efficiency

  • Very simple and quick to start

  • Free cloud registration

Negative points

  • High price

  • No alarm

  • Too many notifications in detection mode
