Razer's Playstation VR versus OSVR smart health innovation

Because it's not just the Oculus Rift on the VR headset market, it's time to dive into its other serious competitors. So the Sony Playstation VR and theRazer's OSVR both represent an alternative to the Oculus Rift. But between the headphones from Sony and Razer, which is better?

Exclusivity

Before even talking about aesthetics or price, it must be agreed that the two helmets are not used on the same machines. Of course, the Playstation VR is exclusive to the PS4 and if it is through the Sony headset that you want to live the experience of virtual reality, you will also need to bring a PS4.

Similarly, you will necessarily need a powerful PC in order to run theRazer's OSVR and thus, the acquisition of the headset may require an upgrade of your PC.

On this point, it is first where you want to play that prevails. Rather console? The Playsation VR is made for you and the PS4. Rather PCist? The Razer is also made for gamers, much more than the Oculus or the HTC Vive. In both cases, you make sure you have a helmet made and thought for the video game.

Price

Besides fairly dizzying prices like that of the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive, respectively € 699 and € 899, the price of the Playstation VR and OSVR are a little more affordable.

Although nothing official is really filtered, it seems that Sony will market its headphones Playstation VR for 399 €. A pretty pretty sum, especially since this price is equivalent to that of the PS4, which you must have to use the Playstation VR. In doing so, in order to take advantage of Playstation VR and if the user has not yet bought the Sony console, it will cost at least between 750 and 800 €.

Next to that, Razer's OSVR costs only € 299, which, compared to its counterparts on PC, does not represent much. But it will still have to have a configuration on PC that holds the road and can be buy new components that can raise the addition to the level of that of obtaining the Playstation VR and the Playstation 4.

On this point, difficult to decide between the two challengers, it greatly depends on what the buyer has as a machine at the time of purchase, but it still seems that the Playstation VR is a slight advantage over the OSVR. Firstly, Sony could always surprise everyone by announcing a price much lower than that speculated, but above all, whatever happens, Playsation VR will never ask for more than 400 € of equipment to be used with the PS4, while the note of a PC upgrade can quickly become excessively salty.

Aesthetic

If here we enter a more subjective area, a clear trend is felt. Admittedly, the OSVR is quite beautiful, much more than most of Razer's products in general, but it must be admitted that the Playstation VR is beautiful.

With a very nice finish, Sony strikes a big design blow on all the other contenders. Black and white, in a quite futuristic and finely rounded design, LEDs in Sony colors, used for motion tracking, add a significant aesthetic value.

Availability

If you want to have a VR headset now, it is rather to the OSVR that you will have to turn. Available since October 2015, its third iteration can be ordered on the official website. This devkit is not necessarily intended for the general public, but rather for developers, although it is quite possible for an individual to obtain and use it.

Besides that, the Playstation VR should be released in 2016, but no official date has yet been announced, although speculators are thinking of second quarter 2016. Unlike the OSVR devkit, the version which will be marketed will be a version largely made for the general public. So, with a little wait, it may be better to turn to Sony headphones.

Feature

On this point, the two helmets are quite similar on all levels. Both having an OLED screen with a definition of 1920 x 1080, they also have a viewing angle of 100 ° and a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

Very good point for the OSVR, Leap Motion technology integrated into the helmet. Thanks to Leap Motion, the user can use his hands, without the help of any device other than the software integrated in the helmet, to make a controller for playing.

Certainly Sony has a similar system, but which must go through the PSMove and its two controllers. This system is still far from the superb Leap Motion of the OSVR and joins more the Nintendo Wiimote. In addition, you will have to go out at least 30 € to access it.

Rendering

On the point of graphic rendering, the most important, it is clear that it’s the Playstation VR that stands out positively. Created for the PS4, its performance is quite impressive, while the OSVR remains less amazing in terms of rendering on PC. In addition, on PC, the two monsters Oculus Rift and HTC Vive win hands down the battle of graphic rendering.

Conclusion

The OSVR has good cards in hand, its technology Bluffing Leap Motion is clearly its best, as is its very competitive price. But in terms of rendering, design and performance, the Playstation VR, which also has one of the best Eye tracking technologies, remains a much more attractive product. Finally, the OSVR is only at the devkit and if there is potential, it is not fully exploited for the general public unlike the Playstation VR which will be largely optimized for gamers.
