This advanced master’s course is aimed at working graduates in medical informatics, medical documentation, informatics, bioinformatics, medicine as well as natural and life sciences from a medical-related environment who want to expand their skills out of technical and professional interests. Perhaps they would like to work as experts in individualized patient care or to support medical and biomedical research. Or you would like to take on management tasks in a management position in the future. The course is also suitable for all those who want to gain further academic qualifications (e.g. doctorate).

Study part-time

In order to ensure a high compatibility of family, work and further education and to reduce the absence from family and work to the bare minimum, 90 percent of the studies are online and 10 percent in the form of face-to-face. Due to the low synchronous proportions during the online phases, the students can design their learning activities flexibly and largely freely.

The online-based self-study takes place with the help of numerous small multimedia and interactive learning units, which include, for example, lecture recordings, videos, e-scripts, podcasts and self-study controls. The active application and deepening of knowledge is promoted through continuous individual and collaborative work on learning and exercise tasks as well as through mutual exchange in the learning group. The courses are not organized as classic lecturer and input-oriented courses, but support an intensively supervised learning process in a variety of ways in extensive personal initiative.

Study structure

The curriculum comprises five major areas of study. Compulsory and compulsory elective modules are offered in each major. All modules have a scope of 5 ECTS points. In four of the five majors, achievements worth 15 ECTS points must be achieved. This does not apply to the master’s thesis and master’s colloquium with a total of 30 ECTS points.

The course starts with a complementary introduction for students with different backgrounds, either medical or computer science. Graduates with an IT background and from medical documentation perform in the “Medicine” module group, but not in the “Computer Science” module group. Graduates with a medical background perform in the “Computer Science” module group, but not in the “Medicine” module group. Graduates from the natural and life sciences draw up their curriculum in consultation with the course director. In doing so, all module groups are to be adequately taken into account, depending on the previous course.

In the further course of their studies, the students make use of the wide range of compulsory elective options, including project work in the field of study, to develop an individual profile. This results in different courses of study, depending on the professional background.

Graduates from medical informatics and medical documentation complete their project work and a compulsory elective subject in the “Biomedical Data Science” focus. Bioinformatics graduates complete their project work and a compulsory elective subject in “Medical Informatics”. Graduates from computer science, medicine and the life and natural sciences in a medical-related environment can choose between the focus areas “Medical Informatics” or “Biomedical Data Science” in their project work.

Career prospects

The course gives you an overview and a basic understanding of topics and trends for the promotion of individualized patient care as well as the support of medical and biomedical research and their impact on organizations.

You will deal more deeply and scientifically with current and relevant concepts, methods, techniques and tools in biomedical informatics and data science. You will acquire new knowledge and will be able to apply it in the solution of complex problems and in the context of patient care in a practical and evidence-based manner. In addition, they deepen and expand their methodological skills in the field of management & social skills.

In the course of your studies, you will develop your professional approach to the subject and will be prepared to make a contribution to the further development of the subject in science and practice. The course enables you to gain further academic qualifications (e.g. for the requirements for taking up a doctorate) and prepares you to take on strategic and managerial tasks in the healthcare sector in the future.
