Unboxing

Made of rigid black cardboard, the box of the New Deal Bluetooth color bulb is simple, made of velvety-looking paper. Rather a qualitative packaging so, despite the impression of the characters which leaves something to be desired and gives the impression that it was made "health home".

When we open the package, the bulb, which is encased in a small black cardboard base, reveals itself to us. A very “plastic” design for this bulb which is quite heavy in the hand.

The instructions are provided in the box is a small leaflet, the “Quick User Guide”, which summarizes the contents of the box, the minimum system necessary for the bulb to be paired, the installation and connection of the bulb, how to adjust the color, change the scenarios, change color to rhythm, change the color of the bulb with a photo, check multiple bulbs, security settings, management and standards. Positive point: a recycling bag is provided in the box for the day your bulb stops working and you want to throw it out.

Design & Ergonomics

This bulb is rather thick and a little heavy in the hand. It is quite “toy”, with a very round design and notches under the bulb of the bulb. If I pushed the comparison to a toy, I would say that its curves make it look like a cartoon bulb, which is pretty cool!

The base is suitable for all types of standard bulb.

Application

The application is rather simplistic, without frills, even very sober. Just download from your App Store or Google Play. The app is called New Deal BBL in both cases. This application allows to pair multiple bulbs simultaneously, and to program various scenarios and combinations.

The app is iOS and Android compatible. The connection with the bulb takes place via Bluetooth, the minimum system requirements are Bluetooth 4.0, with an iPhone 4S or higher, an iPad3 or higher, and level Android terminals, a configuration on Android 4.3 at least.

The app allows you to manage a series of small bulb skills, to start with the colour. With a circular primary color spectrum, you will be able to modulate the mood of your room, once the bulb is paired with your terminal. First remark: if you do not put the brightness at the bottom by using the colors, we get much less colors than what is proposed. In the end, we can have reasonably two to four colors maximum per primary color. By testing, I for my part managed to have light blue, dark blue, fuschia pink and light pink, chick yellow and pale yellow, “alien” green and pale green, white, gray and red and some variations more or less intense purple. It is therefore necessary to boost the brightness thoroughly to obtain more color variations.

While I had no difficulty getting the bulb recognized, once screwed to the base of the light in my living room, I had small problems with the bulb and its application. Indeed, first observation: when I change the colors on the touch screen of my smartphone, the app does not respond very quickly to my orders, sometimes it buggy and I had to restart everything several times because the bulb remained blocked on a color. I don't know if the app has been updated since, but I tested it again three weeks later, and it responded quickly! Satisfied, am I therefore, to be able to control my bulb at will and press like crazy everywhere on the spectrometer.

Then, and strangest point in my opinion, when my phone went to sleep, the app stopped working. The slightest pause would deactivate the system. We contacted David Haddad, CEO of New Deal to discuss this. He assured us that in the case of using the microphone to vary the color light to the sound of music, application faults were to be corrected. However, according to his tests, at health home, the bulb did not disconnect in normal use. Since I have not tested with a third smartphone, I reserve my opinion, it will be necessary to Review on Android on occasion!

Use and handling

Getting started with the New Deal Bluetooth Bulb is very simple. It’s really health home automation for everyone. Apriori, once installed by the parents, a child could operate the bulb without worry. It is easy to use, so it adapts almost immediately to its use.

Fonctionnalities :

Change color using the spectrum or adjust the brightness with the level bar,

Change scenarios (color scenarios are preprogrammed – Romantic, Reading, Dinner, Relaxing, Dynamic),

Change color to rhythm : by selecting this option, the microphone of the app will open and you will be able to listen to music in your room. The Bluetooth bulb picks up sound and changes color to rhythm. Here is a short video to show what it looks like, with two songs: The One That I Want, Lo-Fang, and Everyone wants to become a Cat, Disney – The Aristocats.

Change the bulb color with a photo : despite the funny prospect of lighting your living room the same color as your grandmother's blush last Christmas, or that the console that you recently bought made me rather confused… .this option works . I tried with the photo of a little niece, and I managed to get an atmosphere in the colors of one of her dresses. But as I said earlier, there are not a lot of contrasts so it stays imprecise and you can't get shades of beige for example. Or even Fifty Shades of Gray …. (humor!).

Control multiple bulbs : I have not had the opportunity to use this feature, but given the speed with which the application recognized my bulb, I think that should not be a problem.

Settings: you can give a name for your bulb, but also thanks to the clock, dire your bulb to go out and turn on at certain times. The countdown is a last option which allows you, for example, to go to bed, put a countdown of 20 minutes, time to read a few pages, and the light bulb will go out alone once this time has elapsed. I tested this feature, which worked very well. I would have appreciated even more a progressive modulation of the color to switch off smoothly.

Against competition

The Bluetooth Bulb of New Deal has serious competition, with the Awox brand, which markets ever more amazing bulbs (diffusion of various scents and aromas, with integrated surveillance camera, musical bulbs, colored bulbs, etc.). It is pleasant and simple to use, but could be easily dethroned by its direct competitors. However, Awox sells a bulb of the same range at 51.20 euros on the merchant site of a famous reseller, which still makes a difference of around 18 euros for the same functionality or more or less. A good reason for the New Deal Bluetooth Bulb to win the fight.

But Awox has a particularity … It includes speakers in all its bulbs for remote control and music broadcasting. Doesn't that inspire you something? We do. It deserves an Awox VS New Deal, right? We will do that soon for you!

Conclusion

From my point of view, if the bulb is solid over the long term, it has good value for money for what you can use it for. However, I expect a bulb of this type a maximum of functionality, and it would be nice if New Deal makes a model that combines both the ability to make Bluetooth speaker and bulb color.

What we like: the fact that everything is simple to use.

What we don't like: small inaccuracies and bugs in the bulb.

In short, a bulb that fits very well with me, which I enjoy using from my bed for example, no need to get up to flip the switch. I really made use of the countdown to fall asleep quietly, and the colored atmospheres very much liked those around me (a lot of “Oh" and of "ah it's beautiful!“). The TOP: choose moods based on the movies you are watching, and especially red, which is the most intense color in the range. Perfect for a good blood-chilling thriller, like Shining, by Stanley Kubrick! I suggest to the designer to add an option where I only have to snap my fingers to operate the bulb, and that would be perfect. I liked the color combinations depending on the music, and I quickly got used to the idea of having a colorful interior, it immediately dresses up a room!
