MWC: LG shows Watch Urbane LTE with WebOS and SIM slot

LG has announced that in addition to the already promised Watch Urbane at the MWC, it will also present a variant of the smartwatch with LTE and NFC. Instead of Android Wear, LG uses WebOS as the operating system for this gadget.

The LG Watch Urban LTE has an integrated LTE modem and is therefore also suitable for making calls without a smart health connected smartphone. Text messages and short messages can also be received and answered on the wrist. LG does not reveal in its press release whether the device can in principle also be smart health connected to cell phones. The "LG Wearable Platform Operating System" specially developed for wearables is used as the operating system. According to CNET it is based on WebOS.

The smartwatch is apparently operated by touch, but LG also installs three hardware buttons. With these, for example, the quick settings can be called up and the watch faces can be changed. Thanks to the heart rate monitoring and motion sensors, the LG Watch Urbane LTE can also play as a personal fitness coach. The gadget should also be able to mutate into a “wallet on the wrist” via NFC and enable cashless payment.

On the technical side, the LG Watch Urbane LTE has a Snapdragon 400 chip from Qualcomm, clocked at 1.2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory. The 1.3-inch P-OLED panel has a resolution of 320 × 320 pixels, speakers and a microphone are also installed. The battery has a very neat capacity of 700 mAh for smartwatches. On the connectivity side, there is still WLAN according to 802.11 b, g and n and Bluetooth 4.0. The wearable is protected to a certain degree against water and dust according to IP67 certification.

LG has so far made no statements regarding the price and availability of the LTE smartwatch. The company plans to present the gadget to the public at the Mobile World Congress, which is about to begin.
