Faced with the rapid progression of the coronavirus, wearing a protective mask is a complementary measure to the other health and safety measures that have been put in place. There are several types of protective masks, but not all are created equal. The KN95 respiratory protection mask is one of the best masks on the market. It filters up to 95% of airborne particles in addition to protecting against dust and gases
Presentation of the KN95 mask
The KN95 respiratory protection mask is an FFP (Filtering Facepiece Respirators) type respirator with a particle filter. It is an individual medical protection device which serves to filter dust and particles suspended in the air and thus protects its wearer against viral agents which are transmitted by droplets (influenza, coronavirus, etc.).
The particularity of the KN95 mask is its filtration rate which is 95%. It can therefore block up to 95% of particles, even the finest up to 0.3 microns.
By wearing this disposable respiratory protection mask and using it correctly, the wearer is protected against pathogens, but also against inhalation of dust, gas, smoke, etc.
KN95 mask: Standards and certification
The KN95 respiratory protection mask is a disposable mask that meets Chinese standards GB2626-2006. Its US equivalent is the N95 mask which also filters 95% of fine particles and meets US NIOSH-42CFR84 standards. Its European equivalent is the FFP2. This meets European standards EN 149-2001 and has a filtration efficiency rate of 94%.
It should be noted that masks that meet non-European standards have now received approval to be imported and used in certain European countries such as France or Switzerland. The National Research and Security Institute (INRS) has certified KN95 as being able to be used in the fight against Covid-19. At the same time, the 3M company validated its certification as being equivalent to the European certification FFP2. Knowing that in Europe, according to standard EN149-2001, the filtration rate of FFP masks is defined as follows:
The FFP1 mask filters 80% of small particles; The FFP2 mask filters 94% of small particles; The FFP3 mask filters 98% of small particles.
Comparisons of FFP2, N95 and KN95 masks by 3M
Filtering respirator masks, sometimes referred to as “disposable masks”, are subject to various regulations around the world. All these standards, however, meet physical properties and standard performance characteristics allowing a classification of protective masks according to their efficiency and filtering power.
In the event of a pandemic or emergency, authorities often refer to these standards when recommending breathing apparatus, indicating, for example, that certain people must use a “KN95, N95, FFP2, or equivalent breathing apparatus. “.
On the basis of this comparison the company 3M validates that the KN95 certifications are equivalent to the European certification FFP2, to filter non-petroleum particles such as those resulting from fires, air pollution by PM 2.5, volcanic eruptions or bioaerosols (eg viruses).
N95 & KN95 masks: definition and characteristics
The N95 mask is the “American equivalent” of the FFP2 mask and is certified by the NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health). It is made of polypropylene and generates static electricity, which is very handy for stopping small particles.
It meets American standards, much easier to obtain than European standards. This mask filters about 95% of solid and non-greasy liquid aerosols. Regarding the maximum pressure drop and the general airflow, the result is roughly similar to European masks. Little information is available on the leak rate, a crucial factor in the performance of a mask.
KN95 masks, on the other hand, meet Chinese standards. Like American masks, they filter approximately 95% of non-greasy particles and have an air resistance of 350 Pa or less for inhalation, and 250 Pa for exhalation.
