Things to consider when consuming flaxseed
Nevertheless, flaxseeds cannot be safely consumed in large quantities. On the one hand this is due to the strong swelling effect and on the other hand to the minimal amount of hydrogen cyanide. Because if you ingest a lot of flaxseed without sufficient fluids, this can lead to serious blockages up to and including intestinal and esophageal obstruction. Particularly caution is advised for people with a narrowed esophagus, difficulty swallowing or acute inflammatory diseases in the gastrointestinal area.
However, anyone who consumes 15 g per day with sufficient liquid (2 – 2.5 l daily) is on the safe side, according to the Federal Office for Risk Assessment (BfR) with regard to the hydrogen cyanide content, but also the risk of constipation. Consumption is not recommended for pregnant women, breastfeeding women and children. It is not conclusively clear how flaxseed affects the health of children. Flaxseed can also affect the effectiveness of medications. Therefore, if you take medication regularly, you should consult a doctor.
