Getting started – The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, the premium above all

We had the opportunity to take charge of the OnePlus 8 and Pro, the two new smartphones from the Chinese manufacturer. On the program, quality finishes and some photo ambitions. Let's do the owner's first round.
That's it, OnePlus has presented its 8 and 8 Pro models. With this new batch, concessions are becoming scarce, the technical sheet is swelling and prices are going up. With an introductory price of € 899, the 8 Pro attacks the behemoths on the market. And to carry out such a mission, you have to be convincing. Let's see what the first contact with these new OnePlus tells us.
One of the most "premium" finishes
First pleasant surprise, the finish of the range is harmonized. Thus, the OnePlus 8 offers an aesthetic identical to that of its more luxurious version. A real plus for those who cannot afford the "Pro" termination. We thus find a glass back of the most beautiful effect and a facade almost borderless with a punch that can quickly be forgotten on both mobiles. To recognize them, you have to turn over the smartphones and observe the photo island, that of the 8 Pro being more imposing and comprising more sensors than that of its similar. You can also differentiate them based on their size, but you will need to have a compass in your eye, which varies only by a few millimeters.
If this slight difference in size is not felt as much with the naked eye, it nevertheless has its small effect once in hand. Lighter and easier to handle with one hand, the OnePlus 8 offers a little better ergonomics. However, the two mobiles remain perfectly convincing on this point. The side buttons fall well under the fingers, whatever the model. Note however that the glass back has the annoying tendency to reveal fingerprints.
In addition to an identical finish, the two new mobiles from OnePlus also share the same processor and the same RAM. And we must admit that the Snapdragon 865 does its job well: supported by 8 GB of RAM, the latest Qualcomm SoC is indeed particularly swift – performance magnified by the beautiful panel concocted by Samsung Display. And it is more particularly the 8 Pro which impresses on this point. With its 6.78-inch 120 Hz screen displaying QHD + (3168 x 1440 pixels), the most premium offers simply ideal comfort. Especially since the colors seem correctly calibrated. On this point, the 8 and its 90 Hz / FHD + combo do not fail, but the model still remains a notch below. All this, with colors also of good quality.
On the photo side, the OnePlus 8 Pro is the best supplied. With the main module and the ultra wide-angle module, both equipped with a 48 MP sensor, the mobile offers good quality photos, during the day. We regret unfortunately a rendering much too “flashy” to be realistic. The pictures thus taken are good for social networks, but not very representative. The ultra wide-angle module turns out to be rather interesting during the day, and we also agree that we have never come across such a definition on a module of this type. The 8 Pro also has a 3x (8 MP) telephoto module. This one unfortunately suffers, at first sight, from the same flaws as its neighbors, namely exaggerated colors.
The standard 8 is more shy in terms of photo. It does offer a main module with a 48 Mpx sensor, but it is accompanied by an ultra wide-angle module (16 Mpx) and a macro module (2 Mpx). So many sensors that suffer from image processing identical to those of the 8 Pro. At first glance, therefore, detailed but not very realistic shots.
