French government plans thwarted by Apple

How Bluetooth on Apple devices is blocking the development of StopCovid

The government plans to release its app before the start of deconfinement, next May 11. To operate, it uses the Bluetooth of our smartphones. However, iOS does not allow connection to run in the background whether the data it measures will be used outside of the device. Apple has implemented these restrictions to reduce the risk of hacking.

In an interview with the American site Bloomberg, the Secretary of State for Digital Cédric O announces that he has asked for these barriers to be lifted techniques at Apple. But the American firm seems reluctant to cooperate, preferring to discuss its future application, in preparation with Google.

Obviously, Apple’s attitude is putting a strain on StopCovid’s wing. But it also puts questions about user privacy back on the table. Many organizations and institutions have pointed out the dangers of these applications. The American Union for Civil Liberties (ACLU) therefore points out that these apps can be useful during a pandemic. But the organization also recalls that they are no less one potential threat to our freedoms and personal data.
