Flexible Jenax battery can be folded 200,000 times ...

… and still works. The South Korean manufacturer Jenax has at the first Wearable Expo presented an extremely flexible power storage called J.Flex in Tokyo, which can not only be bent, but also folded. How Tech in Asia reports, wants Jenax who have already received safety certifications in their health home country – and have, among other things, kinked the battery more than 200,000 times.

The J.Flex with its properties is particularly exciting for wearables. As EJ Shin, Planning Team Manager at Jenax, told Tech in Asia, various companies are already working on flexible circuit boards – together with the bending displays from Samsung, LG & Co., the way for flexible gadgets should at least slowly pave the way.

Jenax is stingy with technical data. It is difficult to describe the capacity of the battery in a hypothetical situation, says EJ Shin. However, a smartwatch equipped with a flexible battery strap could reach up to six times as much capacity as currently available models – and play in a league with current smartphones.

The J.Flex should also be waterproof as long as the contacts are protected accordingly. So there is nothing to be said against installing the battery in clothing that would then be machine washable. Jenax sees applications not only in wearables, but also in medical technology, robots, computers, household electronics and aeronautics.

When we will see the flexible battery in the wild is still unclear. However, EJ Shin told Tech in Asia that the J.Flex could completely change the next generation of smartphones.

Jenax is not the only company that works on flexible batteries. Samsung, for example, only demonstrated a flexible battery at the InterBattery trade fair in Seoul last October. The hostesses at the booth, however, only bent the electricity storage – and avoided kinking.
