The best smartwatch innovations from IFA 2019: Fossil brings the 5th generation

The Fossil Group shows the 5th generation of its smartwatch line-up at IFA 2019. The innovations include an integrated loudspeaker with which it is now possible to make phone calls directly via the Fossil smartwatch. For this is on the clocks that are still under WearOS run, a proprietary dial-up app preinstalled. In addition, the integrated loudspeaker can now also be used with the Google Assistant communicate. Furthermore, Fossil has placed the focus on the battery life for the 5th generation of its smartwatches.

For this reason, the new models now come with a feature called “Smart Battery Mode”, which enables the user to select one of four preset modes and thus optimize battery usage. This includes the “Daily Mode”, which promises a 24-hour runtime and allows all features. With the “Extended Mode” it should be possible to charge the Smartwatch only every few days and the “Time Only Mode” only shows the time. This enables a running time of weeks on a full charge or is suitable for short-term savings.

The Fossil brand smartwatches, coming as the 5th generation, are the models Carlyle HR (Gentlemen) and Julianna HR (Ladies). But there are also other newcomers from the other brands that belong to the Fossil Group. The 5th generation smartwatches also include the Diesel On Axial and Emporio Armani smart health connected Smartwatch 3 for men, as well as the Michael Kors Access Bradshaw and Lexington 2 for ladies. The new sports smartwatches from the Fossil Group form the Michael Kors Access MK Go and the Puma smartwatch.

The Apple Watch Lookalike: New Smartwatches from Huami

Also presented as a very young company in the wearables market Huamitwo new smartwatches at IFA 2019: The Amazfit GTS and Amazfit Stratos 3. The former reminds us, at least visually, of the Apple Watch, since the design of the Amazfit GTS is also rectangular. The US manufacturer has installed an AMOLED display with a pixel density of 341 ppi, which seamlessly merges into the metal housing. The smart health watch is water-resistant to 5 ATM and comes with an optical sensor Bio Tracker, which should enable an uninterrupted 24-hour heart rate measurement. 12 different modes are available for sporting activities. With a specified maximum battery life of up to 14 days, the Amazfit GTS started in September 2019 for 130 euros in the German market.

In addition, there are four physical buttons on the Amazfit Stratos 3, which comes with a breathable silicone strap. According to the manufacturer, the battery life can be extended from seven to 14 days via an energy-saving mode. The French manufacturer would also like to be involved in wearables again this year – and will be presenting the Move ECG for the German market. We were able to get an idea of the watch in the Review at the CES. This is a fitness watch with an EKG function. According to the manufacturer, it is the world’s first analog watch that records a medical electrocardiogram to detect atrial fibrillation if necessary. In addition, however, it also tracks your steps, your sleep and exercise such as walking, running, swimming and cycling.

Your design does not initially reveal that the Withings Move ECG is a smart health watch. Because it comes without a display and with a clock face. Since no screen has to be illuminated, the watch offers a battery life of up to 12 months, according to the manufacturer. It is also waterproof to a depth of 50 meters.

The Withings ECG is already available at a price of 129.95 euros. You have the choice between a white and a black dial.

Apple Watch Series 5

It’s no surprise that the Apple Watch Series 5 is Apple’s best watch yet. If you have an iPhone especially, although we bet a lot of Android users would be happy to have one if there was compatibility.

This edition has improved especially with constant display and other minor changes. The price varies greatly depending on the luxury you desire.

We only regret that the battery has not gained in power.

Fitbit Ionic

The Ionic is the first connected watch, strictly speaking, from Fitbit. It aimed at both casual athletes and gym-goers alike. The Ionic has a GPS, a music player, allows contactless payment and displays notifications from your smartphone. It is light, comfortable to wear, and can be used in the pool.

It is a coach watch that we strongly recommend.

TicWatch Pro

The original TicWatch Pro launched in 2018. The functionalities have not changed. Mobvoi has seen fit to renew the design by making it more robust and refined. The company has also added more memory for a better user experience.

The dual display remains a very powerful feature, however. You can enjoy a full Wear OS smartwatch for three days or a simple digital watch for 30 days on a single charge.

Huawei Watch GT 2

You might be looking for a smartwatch with good battery life, so you don’t have to worry about running out of battery.

The Huawei Watch GT’s 445mAh reaches up to two weeks without having to go through the recharge box. That’s something few watches can tell. And if you only use the pure functions of the watch, without syncing it with your smartphone, it can work for a whole month.

It is also a good choice for athletes, because it is very light (41 grams), very comfortable and easy to handle. The users can use the watch for swimming, waterproof up to 5 ATM.

Although in general, Huawei Watch GT’s statistics may seem lower than those of its competitors, the good battery life justifies its purchase.

Moto 360

The Moto 360 smartwatch is back, with a more refined design than its predecessor.

Inside, it has a Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor that gives it exceptional performance backed by 1 GB of RAM.

Its 355mAh battery is enough to keep your watch running all day. Once flat, its charging time is 0 to 100% in one hour, a more than satisfactory result.

Add to that a heart monitor, fitness tracker, and IP67 water resistance. And you get a complete smartwatch at a reasonable price.
