Basis Peak: fitness tracker with extensive equipment
At the end of March this year, Intel acquired Basis Science Inc. accepted. Now the first product developed under a new flag is here: The Base peak, a fitness smartwatch with very extensive tracking functions, was officially launched today.
The mandatory optical heart rate monitoring sits on the underside of the base peak. The fitness watch also determines the wearer's skin temperature – and how much he sweats. These three attributes together provide a conclusion on the current effort of the athlete during training.
The Basis Peak is also equipped with a three-axis acceleration sensor. This makes it possible, for example, to count the steps taken. Furthermore, the smartwatch also evaluates the wearer's movements and, in combination with the pulse, automatically recognizes when he is sleeping – and in which sleep phase he is currently.
According to the manufacturer, the Peak is the first smartwatch that automatically recognizes the onset of sleep. With competitors such as the Fitbit Flex, the user has to tell the gadget when to go to bed. Furthermore, according to the base, the peak can also differentiate whether the wearer is currently walking, jogging or cycling.
In addition to the tracking functions mentioned, the Peak should also offer a number of smartwatch features. However, these do not seem to be available at the time of the market launch – the manufacturer wants to provide notifications of incoming calls, SMS and emails as a free update. There is a vibration motor on board for messages, speakers and microphone do not appear to be in the watch.
Basis Peak works with both Android and iOS smartphones. The connection to the mobile phone runs via the energy-saving Bluetooth Smart. According to the manufacturer, the smartwatch should have a battery life of up to four days. A magnetic dock is included for charging.
Even if it is not as chic as the Apple Watch: the case does – at least on paper – with an aluminum case, stainless steel –Bezel and Gorilla Glass 3 make a high-quality impression. The breathable silicone bracelet is attached with pins and should be easy to replace. According to the manufacturer, the Basis Peak also withstands up to five atmospheres of water pressure. This is enough for swimming, but it is better to leave the watch in the boat when scuba diving.

Base Peak is due to kick off in the US in November – for $ 199. Just in time for Christmas, the watch should also make it to Canada and Great Britain. There are no details on a market launch on mainland Europe. However, we have written to the manufacturer and will update this article as soon as we have received a response.
