Studying in the Upper Palatinate: Living and studying in Weiden

With around 44,000 inhabitants and over 3,000 students, Weiden is a permanent fixture in the cultural life of the Upper Palatinate. In addition to the historical backdrops and the beautiful old town, Weiden offers numerous modern shopping and leisure activities: After the lecture, enjoy a coffee in the old town, sunbathe in the outdoor pool or drink a cocktail in one of the cozy pubs in the evening. Students can clear their heads on the numerous hiking and biking trails. The Weidener Thermenwelt, the ice rink as well as museums and cultural events invite you to visit. And best of all: the cost of living is lower than in Munich, Regensburg or Erlangen. Weiden is the economic center of the northern Upper Palatinate. A large number of companies are located within a radius of 50 kilometers – from world market leaders from the mechanical engineering and logistics industries to numerous global players from the automotive sector and well-known trading companies.

What students in Weiden shouldn’t miss are the annual event highlights. Once a year, on the last Sunday in June, the Weidener Bürgerfest takes place, to which visitors come from all over the Upper Palatinate and celebrate until late at night in the entire old town. With “Weiden Träum” the entire old town shines in blue light, stalls have been set up and the shops are open until midnight. The “Art enjoyment until midnight” combines culinary art, music and art exhibitions in unusual locations throughout the old town. There are also special folk festivals twice a year. The spring festival at the end of April and the folk and shooting festival in August. There is a party in the tent with beer and live music.
