Apple imagines multi-purpose trackers

The rumor around AirTags continues to swell. Apple has yet to announce the launch of Tile-type trackers. However, details about them have appeared in USPTO patent applications.

Filed a year ago, these patent applications for possible AirTags were recently spotted by Patently Apple; after being made public in October 2020. In addition to letting you find lost items, Apple has devised ways for AirTags to display information on your phone. And even help you measure the curve of your spine.

So, until now, it was believed that Apple AirTags will allow you to keep track of your stuff. So this is the first time we’ve heard of other potential use cases.

The patents also speak of a “mounting base for a wireless locatable tag” and a “clip with a constrained retention ring”. They include diagrams that show how Apple trackers can be integrated into keys or an Apple Watch band and be used to control an on-screen avatar.

One of the diagrams also shows that they can be affixed in a building. They could then display information on your phone like a map when it detects that you are near.

Trackers appear to be small and easily attach to “keys, purses, or wallets.” Their goal: to help their owner find lost, misplaced or stolen objects ”. When you need to find an object they’re attached to, Apple described how ultra-wideband technology allows your phone to locate them within a few feet.

Trackers can also produce audible sounds and haptic responses to help you track them down.
