Amazfit Bip S – Connected smarwatch for everyone with a low price

Huami has built its reputation by selling more than 100 million smartphones, but also connected watches on a low budget. A strategy faithful to that of the Xiaomi parent company with a very wide offer in connected objects.

Presented at CES 2020, with the Amazfit T-Rex (military style) that I presented to you in January, Xiaomi offers us a really affordable connected watch, perfect for a first experience.

Amazfit Bip S: a rectangular design in the style of Apple Watch

It takes all the good sides of its connected bracelet, the best-selling Mi Band in the world (now in version 5), but this time with a small Apple Watch look (a habit of the Chinese giant). But, at this price, the perceived quality is related.

The plastic body is light (only 31g) and durable to the touch, while the strap is quite comfortable around the wrist. It is also waterproof up to 5 ATM, which means it can survive a swim in the pool.

There’s a single button on the right of the watch – which doesn’t spin, so you can’t scroll through menus with it – while the display is a touchscreen.

Huami explains that this has increased the screen’s color gamut (compared to the original Bip), but it’s not the color display that packs a punch in smartwatches. It looks washed out and the resolution is low, but it’s still readable.

The on-screen interface is easy to use, and it’s a bit slow. The graphics are simple, but there are a whole host of options, including workout tracking, step tracking, heart rate monitoring, phone notifications, stopwatch, compass, weather, and music playback controls.

While the Bip S is a budget smartwatch, it does come with a heart rate monitor and GPS, so it can track your workouts, even if you don’t have your phone with you.

Autonomy Amazfit Bip S

The included battery has a capacity of 200 mAh which means, according to the company’s own accounts, up to 40 days of use under ideal conditions thanks to several optimizations in the use of energy including the new sensor biometric for continuous heart measurements and that means up to 80% savings compared to the previous generation.

Another big plus is battery life, with Huami saying the Amazfit Bip S can last up to 40 days on a single charge. This lifespan decreases considerably if you use the GPS regularly, but that means you will probably only need the charger a few times a month.

The Amazfit Bip S supports 10 training modes. It provides the main activity monitoring data:

Amazfit Bip S review

Admittedly, its look and its materials are basic, but at less than 60 € it is the only connected watch to carry a heart rate sensor and a GPS. All in an ultra light and waterproof case and bracelet.

We will pamper it especially for its price, perfect for going to play sports without fear of damaging its more upscale watch, to please children, but also for a first connected watch and discover its possibilities.
