a smart health connected scanner that manages your shopping list smart health innovation
We announced the release of Hiku in July 2014. AND at the editors of ABsmarthealth.net we received a Hiku. A what ? A smart health connected scanner! Good… Strange… Why a smart health connected scanner when the “classic” racing apps already use a scanner built into the phone using the Scanit or QR Droid apps… Before the Review, I was not convinced. Why bother with an additional object ??? In fact, Hiku made perfect sense when I discovered his "customization" made by Chronodrive (independent brand). It must be said that the challenge of Chronodrive is to constantly find techniques that will allow us to save time on our chore of racing. Hiku is an object that they have appropriated and which "sticks" effectively well with their philosophy. A pocket “scanner – Dictaphone” which will allow you to scan your bar codes much more easily than Scanit or QR-droïd. Have you always dreamed of becoming a cashier? This object is made for you, with the same "beeps" as at the supermarket checkout!
Mark : Hiku
Category: smart health connected house
Release date : October 2013 in the USA
Suggested price : $ 79 // € 68
Review environment: Samsung and Google Nexus 10 Tablet – Android 5.0.1 (lollipop)
UNBOXING :
The box fits in your hand. Just about the size of a purse box. Inside, instructions, a USB / Mini USB cable for recharging the included batteries (so no batteries). Simple and efficient. No frills.
DESIGN & ERGONOMICS :
The object is nice. It is in your hand. Lightweight. The thumb is placed instantly on the scanner button. The button is the aluminum side. A concentrate of technology when you know that this object replaces the “showers” of cash registers. Including wifi and microphone.
APPLICATION :
I first tried the “builder” app, that is, the Hiku app. It is very simple. Not to say simplistic. One positive point that scared me a little at the start: Hiku recognizes French mass consumption products. You will see it in the rest of the tests, it is still 80% of the consumer products that are so referenced, and you will be able to use it finally everywhere.
1 – I install the app. I subscribe, I create my personal shopping list
2 – Pairing (assembling the Hiku with the application via the Wifi network)
3 – Association
To complete the association of Hiku with your smartphone, a window appears. You have to put the Hiku on it. The Hiku “flash” window flashes for 20 seconds. A green screen announces the end of the operation. The app is ready to use.

USE – GETTING STARTED :
Voila. I put on my cashier blouse. I will be able to embark on the hunt for bar codes! The Review begins.
For the occasion, I emptied my closets looking for 10 everyday items.
smart health connected tablet. Hiku activated, loaded… I start the scan…. With emmental crakers … Landmark brand.
I press the metallic button. Hiku scans and beeps twice. The first beep tells me that the barcode has been scanned. The second, almost immediate beep tells me that the product is present in the database. If the product does not exist, Hiku emits 4 beeps. The first beep to say that the barcode has been scanned. Then, after a few seconds, three “serious” beeps that indicate an error (the product does not exist in the database).
Here is the result of my scan of the ten articles:
Here is the result of my shopping list on the app, I miss the sugar and the beauty cream …
Please note that the articles are well referenced under their French headings.
To add products missing from the database, Hiku offers me at least 3 solutions.
– Record by voice, the product directly on the Hiku scanner. We press the metal button of the hiku and we state the product “cane sugar in pieces”.

– Go to the app and create “by hand” a new product:
– Use phone SCAN (included in the app – Scandit) … which gives the same result as the classic SCAN. That is to say, it will create a “step” in the shopping list. Not that you will have to rename it.
Here, I added the sugar via the creation of a new article on the app and I added the body cream via the hiku voice scan. My list is up to date. I just have to go shopping. I dragged the sugar line to clear it … I wrote it down twice. This line goes into “crossed out” mode but is not deleted. It is possible to redo drag the striped line to integrate it again to the shopping list … Or to another list … It is finally possible to erase it definitively by pressing "clear" (which I did ).
Here I am now at the supermarket. I'm doing my shopping. For each article found, I drag the line of the article in question. Each item goes into “crossed out” mode.
Other features : List sharing, sending by email.
An application that takes on its full meaning with Chronodrive.
Chronodrive appropriated this smart health smart health connected object and secretly developed it before marketing it. All the interest is the friendliness. Once the articles are scanned, they no longer appear on the hiku app, but on the time-based app. A much more user-friendly list with photo of the articles. The object is not yet marketed and no indication of price or rental is indicated on the site.
The site of Chronodrive lab : You can register to be notified of the marketing.
CONCLUSION :
This object is user-friendly and fun. It will easily find its place at health home … Near the fridge for example. Playing merchant is "finally" no longer reserved for 6-9 year olds!
The positive points : Its ergonomics. It’s a nice object to hold. It is efficient, scan quickly. The response time is quick. The app works quite well even if sometimes the products tend to get lost on another list (a bug to be fixed). The object takes on its full meaning with a more elaborate application such as the chronodrive application.
Another positive point is the addition of articles thanks to voice dictation on the device. You must configure the application in French beforehand. Speech recognition is very satisfactory.
The negative points : The product is brand new (very young). Improvements are to be expected. In particular the translation of the application into French. For now the menus and submenus are in English.
The lack of user-friendliness of the application which is reduced to its simplest form, without frills … No images, no photos. No product description, no price …
You must be smart health connected to WiFi to scan…. I had imagined a use where I would have made a wish list by scanning the articles which interest me in the stores … At friends … I sent a word to hiku to tell them my "desire". They confirmed to me that the scan must be smart health connected to wifi and that the data is then smart health connected to the cloud and then sent to the tablet or smartphone .. which must be on the same network.
I would also have liked to have been able to scan the items I buy when I buy them. And that they withdraw from my list at that time … Functionality which does not exist.
For the tool to be interesting, you need bar codes … Even if the authors have added the very complementary voice function …. It takes discipline to scan items before getting rid of their packaging that contains the precious bar codes.
